Public Grief Seminar

"When Grief Gets Complicated" with Dr. Bill Hoy
Date: Wednesday, April 28
Time: 7-9 p.m.
Location: The Inn at 835 - 835 S. Second Street, Springfield
Cost:  FREE | Open to the Public

One of the most pressing issues facing both individuals and families who have lost a loved one and the caregiving professionals who may be providing care is “complicated grief.” Complicated grief often arises   because of an unexpected or traumatic death, the inability to “say good-bye,” or the sensitive nature of the relationship. During this FREE workshop, participants will learn about complicated grief as chronic grief, delayed grief, masked grief, and  exaggerated grief and will learn how to identify and manage the symptoms, as well as how to  counsel, and care for people experiencing these symptoms. In this workshop, we will also pay special attention to the issues of clinical depression and anxiety as a result of grief.

This workshop is FREE and open to the public. The content has been specifically designed to assist those individuals and families who have experienced a loss as well as caregivers, lay caregivers, church volunteers, hospice volunteers, and the community at large.

We have all experienced loss in some way. Let’s work together to support one another, along with our families, friends and neighbors on the often complicated journey through grief.

Reservation deadline is Friday, April 23. | Early registration is encouraged as seating is limited.

 Professional Caregiver Seminar

"Unspeakable Sorrow-Helping Grieving People with Disenfranchised Losses" with Dr. Bill Hoy.

Date: Thursday, April 29
Time: 3-6:30 p.m.
Location: The Inn at 835 - 835 S. Second Street, Springfield
Cost:  $15 (includes Continuing Education Hours)

It is sometimes very difficult to publicly share one’s sorrow—because the nature of the loss, the cause of death, or the relationship itself is not recognized or “sanctioned” by the overall social group. In this workshop, we’ll develop tools and intervention strategies for providing counsel and care to people when their grief is “disenfranchised” by friends, family members, or the community as a whole. We will pay special attention to grief in relationship to the death of developmentally disabled adults, compassion animals, socially-unrecognized relationships, close friends, and “impossible to fathom” deaths.

Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

· Apply a practical framework for discovering and assessing disenfranchised loss
· Describe how the normal loss experiences become complicated because of disenfranchisement
· Utilize practical intervention strategies for various kinds of disenfranchised grief

* Call (217) 544-4646 to register today!

Holiday Help Program

Date: Sunday, November 7, 2010

Time: 2-4 p.m.
Location: The Inn at 835 - 835 S. Second Street, Springfield
Cost:  FREE

Holidays and other significant days can be especially difficult after the loss of a loved one. Butler Funeral Homes & Cremation Tribute Center invites the community to discover, uncover and nurture hope by attending a Holiday Help program on Sunday, November 8, 2009. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the Inn at 835, located at 835 S. Second Street in Springfield.

Suzanne Howell, M.A., LCPC, a national expert on grief, will present practical ways to help people get through the holidays and other significant days. Topics will include, identifying coping skills to get through the holiday season, learning creative ways to integrate the memories of loved ones in to new traditions and rituals, and embracing grief and the pain and fear that accompany it. A memorial candle-lighting ceremony will also take place to honor loved ones.

Because holidays and other significant days are when families and friends traditionally celebrate together, it is important to let those who are grieving know that they are not alone. Each year, Butler Funeral Homes dedicates itself to offering the community the most comprehensive holiday bereavement program in the area, in the hopes that we are able to help facilitate the process of healthy grief resolution.
Butler Funeral Homes is proud of their tradition in Springfield and the surrounding communities, and consider it a privilege to provide the Holiday Help program to their friends and neighbors each year.

The Holiday Help program is open to the public, with no cost or obligation.
